Connect Claude or ChatGPT to How2MapIt
Last updated 13 October 2026
Connect an AI app to How2MapIt and ask about your company’s processes in plain words: how something is done, who does each part, what changed, and what is waiting for you. If you can edit processes, the app can also draft a new process or prepare changes to one, for review.
The app works as you, in the one company you choose, and sees only what you can see there. Nothing it writes to a company process goes live until someone reviews and publishes it in How2MapIt.
What you need
- A How2MapIt account. Your company’s How2MapIt admin creates it.
- AI apps switched on for your company. They are on unless an admin turned them off (Settings, AI apps).
- To create or edit processes: rights to edit those processes in How2MapIt.
- An AI app that can add a connector by its address, such as Claude or ChatGPT on a plan that allows it.
Connect Claude
- In Claude, open Settings, Connectors, and choose Add custom connector.
- Name it
How2MapItand enter the addresshttps://api.how2mapit.com/mcp. Leave the advanced settings empty. - Choose Add, then Connect.
- Sign in to How2MapIt if asked.
- On the How2MapIt page that opens, check that it says Returns to claude.ai, choose the company, and choose Allow.
Connect Claude Code
claude mcp add --transport http how2mapit https://api.how2mapit.com/mcpThen run /mcp in Claude Code, pick how2mapit and sign in. The How2MapIt page says Connect an app on this computer, because Claude Code finishes signing in on your own computer. Allow it only if you started it from Claude Code yourself, just now.
Connect ChatGPT
Add a connector in ChatGPT’s settings with the address https://api.how2mapit.com/mcp and OAuth sign-in. Then sign in to How2MapIt, check that the page names the app you started from, choose the company, and choose Allow.
What you are asked to allow
When you connect, the app asks to read the processes you can read, including their attachments and linked documents. That is all it can do until it tries to create or change something.
The first time it does, you are asked once more, this time for Work on drafts in your name: see unpublished changes and work in review, edit processes and create new ones, and, if your licence includes them, keep your personal processes and attach files you give the app. Allow it only if you want the app to do that for you.
How2MapIt keeps a record of what the app reads for you, for 90 days.
What the app can do
Reading, with the access you have:
search | Searches the published processes, activities, attachments, linked documents and controls you can open, and your own personal processes. |
|---|---|
fetch | Reads one process, activity, attachment, document, control or personal process. A large one comes back as an outline of sections. |
get_screens | Shows the screenshots of an activity’s screens, with their markers, in order. |
list_my_work | Your roles, the processes you take part in, what is waiting for your confirmation, and how many drafts you can still create. |
get_my_confirmations | What you still have to confirm, and your own record of confirmations. |
list_roles | Every role in the company with its department. |
list_published_processes | Every published process you can read, by department. |
search_changes | The change history of the processes you can read. |
get_change | What one change in the history added, removed or changed. |
Confirmations across the company, only for people who may view attestation records in How2MapIt, and only once an admin has switched on Attestation records (Settings, AI apps). It is off until they do.
attestation_overview | How many people are up to date with their confirmations, how many are not, and how long they have waited. |
|---|---|
list_attestation_people | People who confirm processes and what each still has to confirm, longest waiting first. |
get_attestation_person | One person’s confirmations. |
list_attestation_processes | Published processes with how many people have and have not confirmed each, including processes you cannot open. |
get_attestation_process | Who has and has not confirmed one published process. |
search_attestation_record | The record of confirmations, by date, process or person. |
Drafts and personal processes, only if you allowed Work on drafts in your name. Personal processes also need a licence that includes them.
list_editable_processes | The processes you can edit, and where each stands: published, in review, returned, and so on. |
|---|---|
get_process_for_edit | Reads a process’s working copy before editing it. |
create_draft_process | Creates a new draft process under your name, for review. |
edit_process | Applies a set of changes to a process’s working copy in one save. Nothing is published. |
create_personal_process | Creates one of your personal processes. |
edit_personal_process | Changes one of your personal processes in one save. |
attach_to_personal_process | Attaches a file you give the app to an activity of your personal process. |
Try asking
- “Using How2MapIt, how do we process a supplier invoice? List the steps and who does each one.”
- “What How2MapIt processes am I part of, and is anything waiting for my confirmation?”
- “What changed in our How2MapIt processes this month?”
- “Which departments are behind on confirming their processes in How2MapIt?”
- “Draft a How2MapIt process for onboarding a sales rep: IT sets up the laptop, HR runs induction, and the sales manager assigns accounts. Use our existing roles.”
- “Save how I reconcile my company card each month as a personal process in How2MapIt.”
Limits
- Nothing publishes. Drafts and changes wait for the usual review and publishing in How2MapIt. An app cannot publish, submit for review, delete a process, or change who has access.
- Drafts. Each person may hold up to 50 unpublished drafts created through AI apps, by default. Finish, submit or delete drafts in How2MapIt to free one.
- Calls. A connection may make up to 300 calls a minute, by default.
- Large items come in sections. A long process or document comes back as an outline, and the app reads its sections one by one. Asking for the whole item at once works up to 100,000 characters.
- Some things change only in How2MapIt: resources, rules, risks, controls, custom fields, attachments, linked documents and hand-offs of company processes.
- Personal processes. Up to 100 each. An app can attach files up to 700 KB; add larger files, up to 10 MB, in How2MapIt. An activity you mark Not for AI apps stays marked: an app cannot unmark or remove it. Your company’s admins can view your personal processes.
We may change these limits, and update this page when we do.
Disconnect
In How2MapIt, open My profile, Connected apps, and choose Disconnect. The app stops working straight away. Removing the connector in Claude or ChatGPT alone does not end How2MapIt’s side of the connection.
An admin can switch AI apps off for the whole company (Settings, AI apps). Every connected app stops, and people connect again once it is back on. Nothing is deleted.
If something goes wrong
| “None of your companies can connect AI apps.” | AI apps are off for your companies, or you are not an active member. Ask your company’s How2MapIt admin. |
|---|---|
| “AI apps are off for this company.” | An admin switched AI apps off (Settings, AI apps). Ask your admin. |
| “This link has expired.” | The sign-in link was used, was open longer than 10 minutes, or was opened in another browser. Start connecting again from the app. |
| The app says something was not found | It does not exist, is not published, or you cannot open it. Check that you can open it in How2MapIt. |
| The app says it needs the draft permission | You allowed reading only. Approve again when the app asks, and include “Work on drafts in your name”. |
| DRAFT_LIMIT | You hold the maximum number of unpublished drafts created through AI apps. Finish, submit or delete drafts in How2MapIt. |
| LOCKED_FOR_REVIEW or LOCKED_FOR_EDITING | The process is in review, or someone else is editing it. Wait until they are done. |
| VERSION_CONFLICT | Someone saved the process while the app was working. Ask the app to read it again and redo the change. |
| The app asks you to reconnect | You disconnected it, your access changed, or AI apps were switched off and on. Connect again. |
| PERSONAL_NEEDS_LICENCE | Your licence does not include personal processes. Ask your admin. |
| PERSONAL_LIMIT | You hold 100 personal processes. Delete one in How2MapIt. |
| FILE_TOO_LARGE | The file is over 700 KB. Add it on the personal process’s page in How2MapIt, up to 10 MB. |
